The Old Doctor Who Show

44

Doctor Who Podcast by Eric Grissom and Dan Johnson reviewing the classic era. That’s right, this is the good stuff. Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, the other Baker, and McCoy. Maybe even McGann. Some say they do it because they ran over a magical drifter who cursed them. Others claim the show was willed to them by their long-lost British “Uncle”. Whatever the reason, the one thing you can count on is these two Americans really love Doctor Who.

The Best Example Of A Perfect Podcast
The hosts are generous with their time and friendship in reviewing a show in the same manner that, for most Americans , was distributed - out of order and seemingly with no rhyme or reason. I was hooked from my first listen and continue to binge the entire catalog over and over.

    Excellent Classic Doctor Who Podcast
Dan and Eric are a lot of fun to listen to. I particularly enjoy how Eric absolutely refuses to remember names, but remains so good-natured about it that it really doesn't matter. Keep up the good work and thanks for sticking with the Hartnell and Troughton episodes.

    Great podcast
I’m a little embarrassed, but I just figured out how to review podcasts after two years of listening. But this was my first podcast. These guys have great rapport. It’s interesting hearing the perspective of people who haven’t watched these episodes before, and they throw in many interesting pop culture comparisons, which they’re clearly expert in. Five stars!

    I love it
Not a huge Dr. Who fan but I eagerly anticipate a new episode every 3rd week.

A Great Show for Enjoying and Celebrating Classic Doctor Who
I recently subscribed to Brit Box and started checking out classic Doctor Who, and the Old Doctor Who Show podcast has been the perfect companion to my viewing! The podcast is informative, yet fun and lighthearted. Watching Classic Doctor Who for the first time, decades after its original run has been a load of fun, and it has been great to have the Old Doctor Who Show community to share in the experience.

Where have you been my whole life?
OMG. WHAT. WHY. why oh why didn’t I find you when you started this podcast??? Lol. But. Seriously.....I finally stumbled upon this podcast a few weeks ago and I have been binge listening during my work days and finally, my life can be complete. I really do enjoy your show , I am sad I can not find all classic shows :( I’ve been paying for Britt Box and watching the episodes as much as my life allows. At any rate ...Thank so much....

Most self aware podcast out there
I’ve been listening to your podcast since my junior year of high school and to this day i still have memories of listening to you two while zipping down the interstate (carefully)trying to make it to school before the bell rang. By far my favorite podcast about any fictional series because of how completely aware y’all are of the extra thicc coating of cheese that Classic Who comes with. Commentary is top notch and the pre-podcast section is great too, I’ve found many great shows from it most notably Twin Peaks. Also question for Eric, I’ve been thinking about reading some of your comics. Which comic of yours would you say is your favorite or is there one you would like people to read in particular? -Grant

    Entertaining
I enjoy listening to these guys. They don’t know everything about their subject, but they are always entertaining. I think their learning on the fly is part of the charm. I’m hooked. Though I have to slow down, since I only listen to episodes I’ve actually seen. Light hearted listening that I recommend!

    Old School Doctor Who
Fun podcast featuring two entertaining friends. They’ve got a casual, hang-out vibe, funny banter, and, for a podcast that calls itself out on not doing much research, a pretty solid grasp on the show. Also, the song selection for the outro music is always inspired.

    Fun Companion Podcast
Dan and Eric never fail to make me laugh. This is a fun, light podcast by two people who genuinely just enjoy watching the show. These aren't mega-nerds with a comprehensive mental database of facts about the show and they aren't experts on the lore but I don't really want that in all of my DW podcasts so I actually like that. I also like that they don't waste time with extremely long recaps that I have to skip through. Finally, I love how they handle parts of the show that haven't aged well (like sexism). They point it out, laugh at it (in a punch up way) or scorn it as the case may be, and then move on with out excusing it, explaining it, or fixating on it. Most whovians aren't great at that, including other podcasts I like. This podcast has been a great companion as I watch through all of Classic Who for the first time. I don't know anyone irl who likes the show so it feels like I have two friends watching along with me. Highly recommend!
  • Good Ol' Doctor Who
    Ambassadors of Dearth
Eric and Dan enjoy Jon Pertwee and disparage Peter Davison as much I do. This triweekly podcast is the cornerstone of my nostalgic rememberences (of the Daleks) with the occassionaly punk or Nexus references thrown in. Ambassadors of Death, in B&W, are the first Doctor Who I recall seeing on PBS Channel 2 in Boston. The space suites, geiger counters and the Brig's tiny mustache are exemplars of that period of British scifi tv. Eric and Dan disscet all the silly parts and point out all the good parts. If you prefer your Doctor Who wearing a suit of ample cut, this is the podcast for you.

Great reviews of classic Doctor Who
Highly Recommended!!! Fantastic to relive the classic Doctor Who through the eyes of people watching them for the first time. Humorous commentary and great chemistry from the hosts. Ticks a lot of pop culture boxes for me personally: David Lynch, Crispin Glover and more. Will be a sad day when they run out of episodes to review.

    Bonkers
Having grown up with Dr. Who for almost 40yrs I have learned almost every useless trivial fact available about the show. These guys know next to nothing about the show and they admit it! Fun to hear them as they experience the show for the first time from a fresh perspective. Despite wobbly sets, bad effects, & plot holes they can still say that was great fun! Asking questions like if the cybermen are so advanced how come they can be killed by a gold dust allergy? Why don’t they just wear a mask?!.

    Good podcast.
A good podcast that looks at “...Who” in-depth and funny at the same time.

    Old Doctor Who Fans Rejoice!
If you are a fan of old Doctor Who (or just an old Doctor Who fan), this is the show for you! Dan and Eric discover the classic Dr. Who episodes and share their thoughts with snappy banter and side splitting quips. Their chemistry together is perfect, not a rehashing of the episode, rather a celebration of it. Following along with them by watching the classic Who episodes on the show schedule then listen to this podcast. I wish there were DVD commentaries this good!

A lifeboat for those adrift in a sea of Ur-Who
I’ve struggled for YEARS to get into the OG Doctor Who, but there is just so much of it that who knows where to begin? The Old Doctor Who Show knows. Eric and Dan have been the perfect hosts for my journey. They aren’t know-it-alls or completists. They watch from a place of love and interest, and they don’t mind “jumping the timeline” and missing episodes here and there so you aren’t bogged down with the same thing for too long. TODWS is honest, funny, and accessible to those who just want to jump into a specific episode. I’m nearing the end of the Tom Baker era, and I’m looking forward to their support and guidance during the much-ballyhooed Dark Ages of Doctors 5, 6, and 7. Also, I hope to hear my review read on the air! It will be like getting a time-traveling voicemail to myself! (Did you remember to buy milk?) Keep up the good work, fellas!

    The one to listen to!
How long would it take an infinite number of monkeys to write a positive review of this podcast? Thanks guys for keeping it going!

Enlarges the world around Doctor Who
Eric & Dan are masters of pop culture and put classic Doctor Who in perspective by giving the show context both from the time the episodes were made as well as from right now, as fans watching the show. They don't delve pedantically into the show's history or continuity but instead give a fresh, real-time take on a great classic show. I also really enjoy the deep friendship shared by these two lovely guys.
  • :/) )
    Just ok
The show was OK. It really could be much better. There is so much to say and these guys don’t do a ton of research. I kind of feel like they’re winging it. I listen sometimes but there’s a lot of better Doctor Who podcasts out there.
  • LJ Romanoff
More Old Who, less New Who
I've started from their first show and working my way up to their current episode (currently midway through the Tom Baker years). Enjoy the show and I like the episode reviews, but I have no interest in hearing anything about the "new" Doctor Who. If I subscribed to an original Star Trek podcast I would expect the first ten minutes of every show to be about Discovery.

    Great podcast
I do not listen myself... But my husband does as he cleans the house. I hear him laughing as he listens to you guys so keep it up. House is so much cleaner these days!

    Hope this keeps going! (Updated)
Eric and Dan are extremely entertaining and their love of The Doctor is infectious. If you want to sit back and enjoy some Doctor-centric conversation this is the podcast for you! I wrote the above review on Feb 20th 2016. Now almost 3 years later I decided to come back and update it. Dan and Eric have been plugging along for 70 episodes and they have definitely hit their stride. The easy dialog between them is upbeat and funny, and their love for the show is still infectious. This last episode (#70 The Happiness Patrol) was so much fun to listen to. TODWS is a podcast that gives you the feeling of just hanging out with people who enjoy what you enjoy, and love to talk about it. If you're looking for a podcast that entertains, occasionally informs, and always has a good time with classic Doctor Who this is the one.

    Great fun
I really enjoy listening to these two chat about Doctor Who and they have a great dynamic. They stand out in Doctor Who podcasts because they are watching these episodes for the first time and we get their fresh reactions. They are mostly unbiased by “accepted fan wisdom”. My only gripe is that in some episodes they talk about some production history that is inaccurate. I like their lack of research in general since it makes for more genuine opinions, but I wish they would avoid this subject since it does annoy me sometimes. This is my only reason for knocking off a star and it is honestly not that big of a deal. I still love the show and always look forward to new episodes!

    Funny, Often Hilarious
I'm glad a found this show, it's made me want to rewatch the stories I've seen many times over the years. It's funny and often hilarious to hear these guys try to make sense of something that doesn't make sense. The show is never boring. Imagine Patton Oswalt and Anderson Cooper doing a Drunk History version of Doctor Who, and that's this show. Great job guys!

    Refreshingly honest
This podcast makes you feel as if you’re watching Doctor Who with fellow fans, who keep an open mind but are not afraid to laugh at it too every now and then. It’s refreshingly honest and I love that about this fun podcast. Good job!

    Discovered. Binged. Subscribed. Love it.
These guys enjoy "Doctor Who" the same way I do: Full of unwavering, unconditional love *and* a lot of eye-rolling, sarcasm, and nit-picking. Sometimes their "Maron open" goes a little long, and sometimes I get a little frustrated at the stuff they get wrong. But then, a podcast by super-fans who know the whole 55-year "canon" (such as it is) by heart would be a lot less fun. Keep up the good work.
  • Field357
    Great show!
New listener... I listen to many DW podcasts and this is one of the absolute best. Lovingly criticizing the show at times but generally a very positive and joyful take on the show. Thank you! Oh... And they really are so much fun to listen to. As a long time fan it’s so interesting to hear their takes on the stories... Sometimes making observations never thought of in traditional fandom and at times saying the EXACT same things traditionally held by fans. Oh... And one of their phones sometimes has the text message “ding” go off and it makes me check my phone every time. Oh... And if they have to read this out loud on their show then gluurr-oooooooomph! Ga-wocko eeeeeeeeeeemph! Ba-doooongy FACE!!!! And my head is made of blueberry pizza. I like monkeys. Scott in Denver

I just found this podcast and I can’t stop listening to it. I’ve been a fan since the 70s and listening to you guys watch the episodes for the first time let’s me relive them vicariously. I enjoy your take on the show and learn a few things I didn’t know when you research the episodes. Keep up the great work, I’ll keep listening.

New reviews from Old Doctor Who Show
Great to have new reviews for classic Dr Who during the down time in between seasons. Reminds me why I prefer the classics. Good banter from fellow fans with an insight of what it’s like watching the Doctor episodes for the first time. Would like more episodes, but then they would finish the run too fast.

    Enjoyable Classic Who Newbie Commentary
It's quite fun listening to these two explore Classic Doctor Who. I first started watching the show in 1982 in Indiana on PBS. I know many of these serials backwards and forwards. I've only listened to 3 so far (Spearhead From Space, Robot and Castrovalva) and I'm hooked. Am going to watch from Castrovalva on with them. I just hope they learn how to say "Nyssa". 😆

    Best Doctor Who Time!
Finally giving a review to this delightful podcast (only review I've ever given) because Eric and Dan talking tri-weekly about classic Doctor Who stories is one of the highlights of my tri-weeks. They are right on in so many ways as they delve into the show, watching episodes usually for the first time. A+ for they're unique/funny/stupid/carefree/detailed/refreshing/honest takes on each episode. They're cool dudes talking about cool things, it's a pretty cool time, if you're into that sort of thing.

Like a way too long family dinner
These guys are annoying and always talking over each other. They don't actually seem to know what the hell they are talking about and somehow this is a point of pride for them. These two are like those cousins you dread seeing every thanksgiving. Ha! The truth is it is fun listening to these two talk about the show from a point of view different than the other Who podcasts. I originally gave a one star review just to have fun and see how they handled it. Well handled fellas! This is a fun podcast and I enjoy listening to these annoying cousins.

Dan and Eric have an affinity for the Original
Unlike some Podcasts that are self enamored with themselves and talk just to take up time or have guests to take space and time. Dan and Eric, invite us in to their friendship and their love for the classic Doctor Who series. They are unpretentious in that if they aren't sure about something they ask their listeners to update them as there is so much information it is hard to know it all. I listen to multiple Podcasts and really appreciate and enjoy Dan and Eric's commentary. Keep it up as you are doing a fine job. Favorite doctor is Tom Baker, but I have met all of the classic Doctors except William Hartnell and Sylvester McCoy and find I enjoy all of them. Not sure if you have done Enlightment, but the E-Space series has some good story points.

More fun than a mark 3 travel machine full of Kaled mutants.
There aren't many classic Doctor Who podcasts out there but this is definitely a great one. It's something of a first time Who show with New Who fans Dan and Eric looking back at some of the best and not so best classic Who episodes. Their love of Doctor Who is evident in their reviews and it's great to hear some new fans experience the classic sho so many of us have loved for decades. If you like Doctor Who this is definitely a podcast you should check out.

    Terrific podcast
This is a terrific podcast. Eric and Dan show these classics great respect and poke fun when it's deserved as well. They do a great job of breaking down the plot and providing context for the actors at the time. I highly recommend this podcast. Small nitpick: If they would refrain from using the word "episode" when they mean "series" or maybe "storyline" that would be greeeeeat. Mkay?
  • Blake's 7
    Entertaining podcast
Eric and Dan have a great rapport and lovingly critique old episodes of Doctor Who. Would be interested in hearing you compare and contrast classic and new Who once you are done with the classic episodes (not for a long time I hope). I love the classic and am struggling to get into new Who. Best wishes!
  • doctorendub
The only Classic Who podcast you need
I've been searching for a Doctor Who podcast for a while and this is the pick of the litter. It focuses on Classic Who but is aware of New Who, and the hosts are nerdy enough that they are making a Doctor Who podcast, but not so nerdy that they get bogged down in the nonsense of continuity, obscure fan topics, etc. Both are coming to the show fresh, and that's a big plus. A little infrequent for my ravenous appetite for content, but given that they have to watch at least four episodes of Who for each podcast, I'm ok with that.
  • SHutch999
    Worth checking out
This is an outstanding Podcast, and well worth checking out if you enjoy the classic Doctor Who episodes or just want to know more about them. The hosts do a great job of recapping the shows with a fun, light-hearted take and they have a wonderful rapport with each other. The shows I’ve listened to so far, have all been entertaining and remind me of why I loved this show so much back in the 80s and early 90s on PBS. They’ve even prompted me to dust off some of my old DVDs to revisit a few of the classic stories.

Classic podcast for the Classic Doctors
Love, love, love these guys and this podcast! I started with looking up podcast reviews of one episode, and couldn't stop listening! I have seen many of the episodes you have reviewed and gone out and bought many others (and watched a few from library). I always learn something new and laugh out loud on more than one occasion listening to each review. The friendship, banter back and forth and especially the laughing about parts of the episodes together really make the reviews fun to listen to -- sometimes more than once, before and after viewing! I have looked into other doctor who podcasts on specific episodes (City of Death for example), and tried to listen to them and compare them to The Old Doctor Who Show...and I never make it more than 5-10 minutes before boredom sets in. Others try to generate fun with guests etc, but they just sound forced compared to Eric and Dan's genuine friendship and joy with these reviews!! Keep up the good work - i have more past episodes to dig into; first watching and then listening to your reviews!!
  • Smitty0406
    love these guys!
This is a very fun podcast, discussing episodes of the amazing long-running British Sci-Fi show Doctor Who. Well worth your time to listen to discussions about this groundbreaking show in an entertaining way.

    The Ultimate Classic Who Podcast!
Always a great time with these guys. Whether you are new to Classic Who or spent the 70's, 80's, and 90's watching it (like I unfortunately did), THIS is THE Classic Who show for you! Enjoy it. Tim B.
  • Ryan Q
A great show with perfect timing
Eric and Dan could not have known that in the middle of their classic Who podcast, that the fate of classic Doctor Who would end up in question with the BBC streaming rights controversy. But worry not, these two quick witted hosts quip and charm their way forward through iTunes purchases and a sense of mission. Great banter, useful reviews, and a show that’s made by nerds, for nerds.
  • AmyNotes
    Fantastic
These guys are funny. I've binge listened almost all of their episodes.
