Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Free Audiobook

172

The most famous of Jane Austen’s novels, Pride and Prejudice is the satirical tale of the notorious Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, one of the most popular couples in literary history. When the silly Mrs. Bennet tries to marry off each of her five daughters, numerous romantic adventures (or misadventures, one might say) ensure at the Bennet’s Hertfordshire residence. The story is highlighted by the unconventional Bennet family and the book’s modern, comedic take on marriage. A must-read for all literature fans!

    Sleepy Bookshelf
I would rather listen to the sleepy bookshelf, which is slower, but has all the chapters and gets you very sleepy. Also, they have tons of other stories.

Best P&P without a British accent!
The narrator is so good, she overcomes the disadvantage of having an American accent. Excellent!

    Missing chapters
Everything is out of order, there is no ch 16 and 2 chapter 18's. Cant finish this book :(

Semi adequate but I will look elsewhere
It's free and that's the best part. I have heard worse narrators (and certainly much better). The deal killer for me is that the chapters do not play in order, although I have my phone set to do so. The chapters are short, so I constantly have to wake up my phone so I can scroll through and find the chapter that should come next. That was frustrating enough, but having to listen to the narrator give porky pig-like voices to the Binley sisters was just too much. Their "yes" is said as "yeth", their pemberley is said as "pemberwey", etc. It's quite a distraction.

    Awesome!
Very well read and extremely enjoyable. The only issue I had was that some chapters were mislabeled

    Anything else by this narrator?
I loved this and would like to know if there is any other works that have been produced by this narrator.

    Boniva
it is a very good audiobook, the only thing that annoys me is that there is a Boniva advertisment at the beggining of each episode.

The narrator is wonderful but the fact that it is out of order is distracting :(
I recently discovered my love of pride and prejudice after seeing the movie version with Keira Knightly in it and recently began snooping around i-tunes to see what else i could find on the topic. I was delighted to find this free podcast and have found the book to be a million times better than the movie. I truly love the storyline of P&P and the narrator does a marvolus job of capturing the characters' spirit through her dialouge! I love the fact that this was free and although i have yet to finish it i have really enjoyed it. But it really is quite distracting how the playlist is ordered. See if this is helpful to anybody as it was helpful to me: Volume I (Chapters 1-23) Volume II (Chapters 24-42) Volume III (Chapters 43-61) I went back into the playlist and relabled the tracks as chapter numbers so instead of leaving it as Vol2 Chapter 1, i relabeld it Chapter 24. It only took a few moments and it was well worth it. Enjoy!

    Perfect
It's one of the good audiobooks. The reader does a few voices, not to make it too dull, but the text is good enough that it doesn't need more embellishments than that. The reader is excellent! I can listen to it any time!

    Miss Bingley's "speech impediment"
You folks are showing your ignorance. There is an older English accent or affectation that I believe was mildly common in which the r sound was replaced with the w. The L sound, as well. If you listen to some readers of English prose, you will often hear the reader using that accent for some higher class or aristocratic characters. In the P. G. Wodehouse world of Jeeves and Wooster, one of my favorite narrators uses that "speech impediment" version of r's turned into "w" - Like "The Bwitish Wabbit stew is weady wight now!" - for who... well, for ONE of Bertie Wooster's best friends. Therefore, what you're complaining about in the narrator's "acting" of Miss Bingley is, to my mind, a great strength which lends authenticity to the performance!

Very well done, but with a few shortcomings.
The reader is seems to incorporate the little nuances that make Pride and Prejudice a truly enjoyable novel, and reads with inflection in the right places. As this is a podcast, I do not think that the flaws are of very much consequence. I will, however, point them out: The first is that a few chapters are missing, and one cannot be downloaded; the chapters are also out of order. The second is that Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley have accents that are rather overdone. They do not sound English, and speak in a way slightly reminiscent of Elmer Fudd, with a lisp, and mispronouncing the letter 'r'. Overall, I am very satisfied, and very thankful to the person who has worked so hard to produce this reading.

    Best reading I found...
For being free the podcast is a great buy. It is tedious to convert the podcast so you can rearrange it in audiobook format in itunes. But it is worth it. I am only half way through and not sure if all the selection is there. The slur that the reader gives the Bingley sisters is very odd and annoying but that is my only complaint so far. I would def give it a try!

    Amazing!
I am about a third of the way done with this podcast, and I really like it. The person reading it is amazing! I love the different voices of the characters. The only thing I don't like is that the reader makes Mr. Darcy sound weird. Besides that this podcast is really great. I enjoy listening to it.

    Clairification
If memory serves me right...a lisp was considered a very attractive attribute to a lady in this particular time period. The reader may have been trying to give the Bingley Sisters a very high class air about them accourting to the times.
  • Lyra517
    Very poor version
I found I couldn't get past her depictions of some of the characters. Why do some lisp when that is never mentioned in the books? I know Mrs. Bennet is supposed to be annoying but I just started skipping every passage with her in it.

I can't believe I get this for free!!!
I recently finished reading Pride and Prejudice, and I absolutely loved it. It is one of my favorite books, and I adore the story line. (the movie is amazing too!) Unfortunately, I had to get the book from my library because I don't actually own a copy. I was dreading having to return it, because I love to have my favorite books available for me to read any time I want. I really didn't want to have to buy the book, and when I found this on iTunes, I was extremely excited. I can't believe I can get this for free!!! And the reader isn't bad at all! Thank you iTunes! For all of you P&P fans, I recommend getting this NOW!! Who cares if the chapters are out of order? It's free!
  • hannaberrrggg
if it's free, it's for me!
Very well read! However, some chapters are out of order and some are mislabled. Here's the key: Currently labeled Vol3 Ch8 is really Vol2 Ch8. Currently labeled Vol3 Ch10 is really Vol2 Ch10. Currently labeled only Ch8 is really Vol3 Ch8. There are two Vol3 Ch. 11; the one with a time of 14:22 is really Vol3 Ch16. There are two Vol2 Ch16; the one with the time of 14:03 is really Vol2 Ch18. To reorder the chapters, put them all in a playlist to drag and drop to correct location. Hope this helps!

    Very enjoyable
I am a little more than halfway through this and have found it to be very enjoyable. I do agree with the most recent comment on Mr. Bingley's sisters. I have been thrown off everytime they speak because it's so distracting. But overall I am really pleased to have found this free podcast by mistake.
  • Jecca
    Excellent!
This novel podcast is the best I've heard. The narrator is very appropriately expressive and a delight to listen to. I do agree with others who have mentioned the lisp of the Bingley sisters as being quite annoying, but I have no other quarrel with it.
  • linds313
Engaging voice; fast pace along with enunciation
One of my favorite movies, I would choose not to read such a long book but loved that it was offered as a podcast. May still read the book as Austen's version is that much better than the movie. Only listened to the podcast in the car, and I found myself stalling and driving around the block a few times so as to finish a chapter.

    Great! xx
This is a great book and a great idea, but I'm just wondering why Miss Bingley is Korean...
  • tara_retro
    Highly recommended!
I just finished listening to this excellent podcast. It was so engaging (despite the fact that I've read P&P many times before) that it only took me three days to complete. I got it to listen to while working out but often couldn't resist listening to it while sitting around at home. It's true that some of the chapters are mislabeled, but it's pretty easy to fix, especially if you just look up the full text online and listen to the first few lines to match with it, which only takes a moment. The performer, Katherine Byers (my apologies to her for I've no idea how to spell her name), has a lively voice and good pacing-- not too slow, not too quick-- altogether very enjoyable to listen to! For the most part it is easy to tell who is speaking and she does an especially fun job with Mrs. Bennet's voice. In short, this is a must for P&P fans! Thanks very much for the free podcast!
  • sparklenshine
    Really professional reading!
I greatly enjoying the readers voice, she wasn't montone and had very comical voices for many of the characters. The only weird thing was that for each of the Bingley sisters spoke with an annoying lisp, which I have no idea where that came from. But other than than that was great, especially because it was free!! I would even pay for this :)

Great to listen to, hard to put in order
While I have not completed my listening of all of the chapters it seems that some chapters are missing, though it could just be me. Also you have to put the chapters inorder to listen to them in order, but other than that this is a really great reading of Pride and Prejudice.

    bless the lord.
seeing that i have a test on this novel in two days and i havent actually opened the book, this podcast is going to be the best thing thats ever happened to me. thank you itunes, but next time put it in order <3
  • shmiff
    Wonderfully done thanks so much!
Perfect to listen to. I'm just now getting into Jane Austen and am on the road to making myself read and/or listen to all the books. The reading of this book (so far my fav) is absolutely perfect, the reader does a great job and I'm not put off in the least by the lisp of Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst, it fits their snobby, fluffy and vacant characters to a "T". I think it makes for fun listening and great comedic style by the reader!
  • peanutga11ery1
    What a disappointment.
Why on earth would Miss Bingley and her sister have severe speech impediments? It really does take away from the reader (or listener)'s enjoyment of these villainous characters, as one instead is distracted from the characters and cringes on every syllable as to the podcaster's sensitivity to actual people with speech impediments, which are not a trifle nor are they funny to live with. Mr. Darcy's manners far recommend him over whomever decided that this decision was a good one.

    mmm...Mr. Darcy....
extremely enjoyable, one of my favorite books. i will save this podcast and listen again and again...the only exception is the weird lisp that Mr. Bingley's sisters seem to have...that's a bit off putting. but the rest is worth it! you have to love Darcy.
  • Moonmoth
    Great podcast
The narrator is clearly spoken and adds an individual life to each of the characters. A very enjoyable listen.
  • watgirl
    Volume/Chapter issue
The reader has a good voice and I found listening very enjoyable. My only issue is the labeling of the volume/chapters. Some are labeled incorrectly and you end up skipping ahead and since she only referrences the chapter when starting you don't know if you are in the right volume.
  • JoannaS
    Wonderful podcast!
The voice actress does a phenomenal job reading the text. Also, I happen to think that the speech impediment of Caroline Bingley fits her character perfectly- as she is quite snooty and prideful herself. (If you have a problem with the chapters... just drag them into an iTunes playlist... and re-number them 1-61...makes for easy playback.)
  • swin
    Chapter mix-up annoying
While I haven't yet listened to the whole book, I have enjoyed it very much so far. I just wish the producer of the podcast would take the time to fix the chapter numbers! I did figure it out myself after a reference to the text, but that doesn't help others who are confused as I was. A hint: In most cases of confusion it is the volume number that is wrong, but in one case it is the chapter number. Good luck!
  • madrugada
    Great reading!
I agree that the reading is impeccably done, with the exception of the overly-obnoxious speech impediment used to distinguish Caroline Bingley. I would also like to appeal to whomever is in charge of this podcast to please put the episodes in order and fix those episodes that are not attached to any particular volume. I listen to this book in the car on the way to work, and it's impossible for me to figure out while driving which chapter comes next!

    Fun!
I enjoy Jane Austen work alot and this is great. I love it so much

    Fabulous
I adore this reading of Pride and Prejudice - the reader's voice is perfectly suited to the material, and the audio quality is clear as a bell. I hope there will be more to come!
  • chicacheca
    Very agreeable.
The book is probably probably one of my favorites so trust me I'd be critical to anything less than perfect. I enjoyed it very much. The actress who reads does a very good job.
  • woodstock1847
    Good, but...
Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors and I was happy to find this podcast. Overall, the reading was enjoyable, but I was somewhat annoyed by the fact that Ms. Bingley and Mrs. Hurst sounded as if they had French accents with lisps.
  • bhens13
    Not quite Austen...
This novel was clearly read, but I think the narrator interpreted many of the characters wrongly - especially Elizabeth. The subtle humor and brilliant whit of Austen was masked by over emphasizing the wrong parts of characters speeches. Also, PLEASE loose the lisp! Mr. Bingley's sisters sound ridiculous and ill educated lisping through the entire novel.
  • heytherelynn
Wonderful once organized - easy to do!
I am very happy to have this podcast - I adore the story and never tire of reading it or listening to it. I found an easy way to organize the volumes and chapters - you can create a playlist or smart playlist and then go in and put all of the episodes in order. There are a few that are not identified correctly - but I figured out which ones were wrong by looking in my copy of the book. This is a wonderful solution to purchasing the audiobook if you are watching your pennies!
  • acmic
    Pretty Good
This is an excellent reading, except for the reader's voice of Caroline Bingley. She has a strange lisp for her that makes her sound uncouth -- very unlike Miss Bingley. But otherwise, a delightful and enjoyable reading of the text -- I am hoping for Emma and Sense and Sensibility soon!!
  • Lynda2
    Missing Chapters??
Is it me or are there some chapters missing. For instance, chapters 10 and 18 are missing from Volume 2. This makes it very confusing when trying to follow the story. If I am mistaken, please let me know.
  • Mr. Clarinet
    What the heck?!?!
Okay, I love this book. But, what the heck is up with the order that the tracks or in? They're all mixed up and crazy! I don't understand why there are 2 vol3 - chapter 10's?
  • Jingles1963
    Very well done!
I love this podcast. The reader does a fabulous job with the accents as well as voice changes. I wish I could find out her name! I've become a Jane Austen fan. I tried to read Pride and Prejudice and had a very difficult time following it. I'm pleasantly surprised that I can hear the text and follow it very well.
  • Raders328
    Very enjoyable
Overall, this is an excellent reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it - to the point that I was sneaking listening to it on my iPod while at work! I only have a few complaints. The affected voices of Mr. Bingley's sisters were quite distracting. Why does it seem as if they have speech impediments? Also, some of the tracks were mislabeled - which made it a bit difficult to find the correct chapters while driving.
