Fail Better with David Duchovny

To be human is to fail – period. And not just to fail once, but to fail a lot. As the author Samuel Beckett said: “Fail again. Fail better.” This saying means a lot to me and my family – so much so that my daughter got a tattoo of it. Why are we, and so many others, so deeply concerned by failure? And if it’s something we all do so often, why are we so afraid of it – especially those of us here in win-at-all-costs America? In this podcast, I sit down with successful, thoughtful people like Ben Stiller, Bette Midler, Sean Penn and more to talk about failure – or what they labeled “failure,” but what was really an unparalleled opportunity for growth and revelation. I even want to delve into my own hardest moments, when I wrestled with setbacks, shame, and fear. We’ll still fail again. And again. But maybe if we fail better, we’ll feel better -- and maybe if we can all laugh together in failure, that's a start.

    Enjoying this Chapter
David, I really enjoy episodes when your enjoying / challenging yourself. Conversations with philosophers, writers, or other unconventionial guests really seem to make you light up. By all means, Please keep bringing in people that you have worked with or have special meaning in your life, but I just had to mention how great it is to hear you really push on something or someone your interesting in. Dream Guests Jane Goodall, Other Writers that you love, or regular people that you find interesting. Keep it up!

    GA episode
A fantastic series and I enjoy the easy flow of conversation; I particularly am attracted to how eloquent and articulate the opinions are expressed and explored. This specific episode however was highly anticipated but I’d have to say I was mildly disappointed. In comparison to the series, there was a bit of a wall with Anderson- alright, you don’t want to go there or go too deep, fine…but why then come onto the show if the bulk of it ended up being mostly a promotion for her products? I think if she were to make a return, there were some excellent topics that were brought up and fell off that I hope could be discussed more without the added exclusivity of “buy my thing and then I’ll maybe talk to you about something of substance.”

    Love the podcast
I already have a crush you, David. I really didn’t need “David Duchovny Why Don’t You Love Me?” stuck in my head. Aside from that, love the show, particularly your monotone voice.

Diversity of guests brings me back each week!
Each time I listen to this podcast, I come away having learned something powerful from each of the guests. Duchovny is more than just a talented actor and writer, he’s clearly a deep thinker and his recent guests prove that. After the first few episodes being celebrity-centric, I never expected to hear such enlightening convos with Gabor Mate, Mary Trump, Jack Halberstam, and Dr. Vivek Murthy. Duchovny asks thoughtful questions and is becoming a better podcast interviewer with each episode. I’m eager to hear more!

    Interrupting Kara Swisher
Mostly, this show is fun, introspective, and thoughtful. However, David, you were interrupting Kara Swisher too much. I’m assuming you were really excited to talk with her and that’s why you kept interjecting, but I wanted to hear more from her. It’s a pitfall many male interviewers fall into; interrupting their female guests. Do better.

    ‘Maggie Wheeler
Today I thought that interview with Maggie was spectacular! She’s such an amazing woman who was born with a fire in her soul! To go to audition to audition hoping to get a chance for a show or movie. She found a way to push her through the doors and achieved what she decided her career path was to be despite her mother and I applaud her dedication in the acting process. I listened to her voice and a whole gamma of emotions I was angry regarding the anti-Semitic behavior from the Networks I laughed, cried along with her. She has many blessings out there for her and for you as well. I don’t know if she wrote a novel about her life and struggles, because many of us (women) would enjoy reading about her. Perhaps you could speak to her on this subject! Her mother is a piece of work. I thought my parents were difficult, but she had it worse and overcame and conquered her career. My career vanished because my father pulled funding on my college tuition and forced me to come back home.

    David is incredible!
I’ve been a loyal listener to this podcast since its inception, and I must say that each episode has consistently improved. The latest episode was particularly exceptional and stands out as one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. David, please continue this podcast. Love your diversity of conversations and guests. what stands ot most about this podcast is the discussion of failure and success. It seems that most people are always focused on success and don’t discuss failure. these discussions bring things full circle, and is just relaxing to listen to. Thank you!

    I love this podcast!
I recommend this podcast to all my friends. Listening to David discuss life, failures, overcoming struggles, and navigating new experiences with his guests in this podcast is very refreshing and I love it. He is very genuine, grounded, real and relatable. You can tell he cares and there is a level of comfort, confidence and rawness in this podcast that keeps me wanting to listen to more, unlike a lot of other podcasts that feel fake or trying to be Keep them coming David!!

    Mary Trump Interview
Thank you for this great interview. Your questions were insightful and provocative. You really captured the mood of our times without hitting us over the head with commentary.

    Fun conversations with celebrities
Pretty good effort as Duchovny’s first podcast. Good conversational style interviews with other celebrities and influencers. He’s clearly intelligent and knows what he wants to get out of the interviews. The improv nature sometimes leads to intriguing topics. Still a bit all over the place currently. For sure will get better over time.

    Great conversations
Inspiring conversations. David has a wonderful voice and I could listen to him talk about anything. He is generous, thoughtful and warm with guests.

    Good premise, poor delivery
I was a huge X-Phile back in the day. I’m bummed to say that DD talks over his guests is and clearly trying to have a specific conversation (mostly focused on him), not let the conversation happen even vaguely organically. Swing and a miss.

    Dr. Gabor Maté
I love podcasts where I can learn something new about why humans behave the way we do. I am a big fan but I have to say I am so over these celebrity endorsements. I really hope we can develop our own critical thinking skills and vote according to our values and not according to what our favored celebrities tell us the way we should vote. 🙄

    Kamala convert
I’ve had this show on my “to listen to” list for self improvement reasons (as well as being a die hard X file fan). Hadn’t gotten around to it because of life’s busy lately, but decided to prioritize it today after hearing David go on the record about voting for Kamala Harris. (Not that I was withholding that support because of political uncertainties, it just reminded me of why I like to listen to certain people share their heart and stories.) I appreciate that bravery, and I appreciate celebrities doing what they can where they can to try and make a difference before the November election. I guess it stuck out to me and I wanted to write a review appreciating the visibility here, and rather than look at numbers of listeners you may have lost, you’ve earned the attention and prioritization of at least one who appreciates the energy that took. Thanks, and I’ll be back for more 🙏

    Fantastic!!!
I love this topic, and the idea of learning from failure to become better. We often think of failure as this horrible lesson, but the reality is that failure can be gift.

Intelligent conversations with long lost friends
One of my friend’s parents calls me his long lost friend. He’s calm, alive, funny, skeptical, and most importantly, completely human. Occasionally, “intelligence” or being “learned” can be embarrassing or difficult, but this podcast opens the parts of the mind that we are rarely able to flourish with appreciable conversations and human connections. Absolutely been loving almost every ep so far, but the conversation with Adam Grant gives you the feeling of the deepest and most comfortable breath. Puts you where you should be, a place you missed, even though you forgot you belonged there. 200/10, rec.

    Thanks So Much!
I’ve had a lot of respect for David Duchovny over the years as he’s continued to take creative risks and tell his own story through it all. From the X-File episodes he wrote, to House of D and Holy Cow, if someone were to look at it all from afar, the man has loads to be proud of. But people have sometimes given him a bad rap and its a tough business. What I really like is that, as he gets older, DD reveals more of his own attachment to creativity, and the Beckett idea of “fail, fail better” makes so much sense as a frame to be having deep and honest - public - conversations that tend to explore the emotional and psychological depths of creativity. Yeah, there’s way too many commercials, but that’s the pod biz these days. Thanks DD for sharing…. lots of insight and valuable questions.

Please keep it up, I’m loving this!
There is such an inundation of podcasts today that I am so reluctant to seek out or try anything beyond my tried and true. But I have to say, Mr Duchovny’s podcast is really compelling. I can’t tell if it’s his intelligence, self deprecating humor, vast repertoire of stories, but I am absolutely charmed. Thank you!

I love David Duchovnys podcast. It’s the only one I listen to. Unless he’s a guest a someone else’s podcast then I listen to that one too ❤️

    Mixed reviews, but hopeful
David allows guests to speak, which is lovely. However, his ability to gently guide the guests - thereby fulfilling the storytelling purpose of the show - is not fully developed. For example, the Griffin Dunne interview felt like a generic book tour interiview. At some point, I forgot what podcast I was listening to because the focus had become so broad and dilute. I hope David continues to develop the show and his ability to listen and guide as an Editor, not just a fan.

    Thought provoking and honest.
I enjoy the different perspectives each individual brings to the table regarding personal failure. Humans are, “The Perfection of Failure.” Keep these stories coming DD!
  • ReadingInBedWithCats
    Honest and insightful
I love DD’s honesty and vulnerability. He really connects with his interviewees and they get real and go deep. Former Fox Mulder fan girl here loves this new iteration of Duchovny.

    One of the Best Interviewers
I saw Gillian Anderson post about this podcast on instagram. I figured I’d give it a listen and if nothing else, the soothing voice of David Duchovny would lull me to sleep. Wow! I completely underestimated him! David is a fantastic interviewer who asks deep, thoughtful questions. You can tell he thoroughly researches everyone he interviews. He also chooses a nice variety interesting guests. I never write reviews, but I love this podcast so much. Don’t sleep on this one!

    Lance Armstrong apologist
I enjoyed a couple of the interviews that had some interesting topics. But when you get to the Jenkins interview, it’s just painful to hear. First, she talks about all of her privileged early life and how her dad opened the doors for her to know all these athletes. OK maybe she earned her spot at Stanford and no one paid her way in but then she talks about Armstrong. I rolled my eyes when she said oh he cheats but everyone does it’s soooo hypocritical. Like that makes it all right. Then what made me turn off the podcast: I don’t care that he cheated but I care cause he didn’t personally call me to tell me. OK boomer, that’s what is important here. Need better and more grounded guests

    Failure is the greatest teacher
To the host and editors and producers of this show: With all of my being—thank you for making this show. Thank you for asking David Duchovny to talk about his own failures and what he learned, and then recruiting other celebrities and thinkers to share about their own failures and what happened. Doing this helps deconstruct the socially-mandated assumption that perfection is necessary and that failure doesn’t exist—and if it does you must be punished and consigned to a memory hole for having failed. This show helps deconstruct the stigma of shame that infects the concept of failure. Listening to this show, I feel like I can take steps toward learning how to forgive myself for failing at various times of my life. Thank you, all of you, for this.

Remember when Sean Penn spent many hours beating Madonna bloody? Asking why he’s gotten a pass for all these years would have made for a more interesting interview.

    My new favorite podcast
I listen to a lot of podcasts but this is by far my favorite. David’s insight into his own experiences as a human being and his willingness to share them with the listener is profound. Rarely do we get such vulnerability and transparency from people we view as brilliant and highly creative. David’s ability to put those traits on display lure his guests into being honest and vulnerable as well resulting in deep, honest and funny conversations. The day after “notes” are my favorite part. I love that he’s sometimes not yet fully awake and making voice notes about the interview the day before. This show proves that failure can be our greatest teacher and we are all a work in progress. David shows his audience our experiences and feelings are not something to fear or be embarrassed by but to embrace and use as tools to become the best version of ourselves. Pro tip: listen while getting ready in the morning to feel more confident going into your day. Thank you David for sharing your journey to becoming your best self. You truly are an inspiration.

    Wonderful
Love, love this podcast. Duchovny is such a smart, insightful interviewer and so willing to be vulnerable. Nothing better than an interviewer who yearns to know and get to an insight he can use in his own life. Love the self-deprecating post interview evaluation as well. Please keep going.

Knock off of How to Fail
It’s ok, but such a knock-off of the long-running How to Fail podcast. I’m disappointed with Lemonada but not surprised. Of course a man is going to show up and use his money and fame to just do the same thing a woman has been doing for years. 🙄

    Vulnerable, smart, inspiring
I hate most podcast hosts because they work too hard at Hosting with a capital H. It’s obvious David is largely invested in showing up to conversations with people he admires. He’s utterly unselfconscious, which is making me fall in love with him all over again (I was Fangirl Extreme during X Files). This show is a healing balm for my 52-year-old soul!

    Best Voice in the Business
Always wondered if Fox Mulder’s dry, self-effacing wit was FM or DD. As a long time fan, David’s voice is as familiar as that of an old friend. Except that friend has tuned that voice and the cadence of his words into a beautiful instrument. An instrument is nothing without a heart and mind. He’s excellent at drawing a flowing narrative out of his guests. Listening out of order, I was surprised to find the Ben Stiller interview was the first, it was that good. Added Zoolander to my IMDb watchlist after listening. More please.
