The Assignment with Audie Cornish

News #202News Commentary #47

Every Thursday on The Assignment, host Audie Cornish explores the animating forces of this extraordinary American political moment. It’s not about the horse race, it’s about the larger cultural ideas driving the conversation: the role of online influencers on the electorate, the intersection of pop culture and politics, and discussions with primary voices and thinkers who are shaping the political conversation.

    Good topics, too many interruptions
Some really interesting topics but she needs to let the guest talk. Heard more from her long winded questions and commentary than the guest being able to give a complete answer before being interrupted. It’s her show though so I guess it’s her call. Wonder how frustrating it is for the guest.

Audie Cornish is a national treasure.

    Thank heavens for Audie!
Audie Cornish is a smart and essential voice in today’s news. This is a terrific podcast. I only wish she could do it even more often!

Audie for Firefighter of the Year
First and last time listener for the hosts attempt at interviewing Peter Kalmus. The irony- of inviting on a guest who seeks to flag the ineptitude of media for their lack of urgency and accuracy when reporting on Climate Change- only to shut him down once truths are revealed. Maybe Audie should be on the front lines of fire suppression with her unmatched ability to extinguish the conversation.

Audie’s interview with Peter Kalmus was Shameful
I thought I really enjoyed this show until I listened to Audie repeatedly interrupt, minimize, and shut down a grieving, respected, highly informed and very calm scientist she was interviewing. I kept pausing the show and gaping at how cold she was being to a man whose hometown was burning. I can’t believe they posted him apologizing to her and didn’t even try to edit out their producers’ notes about how his grief was overwhelming… for them?!? Glad I now know the truth about the lack of empathy in this interview room. Unfollowed.

    The world is literally burning
Audie shut down her guest bc he criticized Obama. A man who actively celebrated we his successful efforts to boost the fossil fuel industry. Girl bye.

    New format? No thanks
I have been a fan of this podcast since it began and would normally be a five-Star fan. This review is specific to Monday’s show and my sincere hope that this will not be the new format for the show. 30 mins of Audie interviewing Anthony Scaramucci would have been insightful and memorable. The panel discussion was disjointed, there was never a fully formed discussion on any one topic, and it just devolved into yet another show of people talking over each other. Hoping against hope this isn’t a permanent change - if it is, I’m sadly gone.

    So good
Love the experimental format with Cornish, Swisher and Lantham. Do more! Would love to hear more of these honest group talks. Nice break from onslaught of crummy news of impending administration. I’m a regular listener and appreciate all of the context and perspectives you bring in. Learn something every show. Even if/especially when it’s a topic that I don’t think I’m that interested in. Essential listening.

    Follow-up Queen!
Want more than the first question? Audie is the journalist for you. She never settles for the limits of a rehearsed answer. Instead- she goes for the second answer. She doesn't let anyone off the hook.

    New Fan!
I’m enjoying your insightful podcasts 😃. Glad I learned about you from CNN. Enjoyed your hosting of the Abbey Phillips show last week. Keep them straight 😅.

    Very good show
I think Audie has amazing interviewing skills and a real will to understand various perspectives and to bridge sides. She never talks down to guests or sounds judgmental and has helped me see other people’s point of view, even when I don’t agree with them. Great great host! I also like her thoughtful and amicable tone. Well done. I’ll keep listening.

Can’t wait for the next release
Absolutely enjoy listening to this podcast. I especially enjoyed the latest episode with the MMA fighter and her “taking him to the mat”. I’ve enjoyed almost every episode and can’t wait for the next one to be released…. Keep filling my inbox with great content, please

    Regarding Trump and the UFC
Life imitates art…remember the movie Idiocracy. We’re so close, so hilariously sadly close.

    Insightful!
Audie Cornish comes with the receipts. She dissects a lot of great issues with great insight and clarity. Very much worth the time. I will say, she does however need to stop referencing how old she is like she is some ancient person out of step with modernity. She was born in 1979 (if the internet is correct). I am 49 having been born in 1975. No one considers me old. Maybe living in Japan is cause for that. But regardless, I am not old. Joe Biden and Donald Trump are old. Audie’s a baby by comparison. Don’t shortchange yourself. Oh, the backing song from Kid Rock’s song at the RNC, was originally by Metallica - Sad But True.

    CNN tonight
Discussing Trump and his Arlington “thumbs up” imbroglio, you just showed a picture of Trump with Kyle Rittenhouse and mentioned offhandedly that Rittenhouse “killed “ someone. How absolutely insensitive of you. Your tossaway lines have a growing level of despicability that I won’t put up with any longer. By the way, Rittenhouse killed two people and badly wounded a third. Kara Swisher lauded you when you were virtually unknown. A wasted recommendation. I will never watch or listen to you again.

Insightful, wonky with a spoonful of humor
Great guests, smart and likable host, and you get a deep dive on politics. Scratches that political science nerd itch every time.
  • Ddoggy1
    PAY ATTENTION
The episode with writer/journalist Elle Reeve is thought altering. I have more respect for the messaging at the DNC regarding offering grace to those who have different opinions. Politicians are taking advantage of people looking for hope. This doesn’t excuse the hateful behavior but does shed light on the origin of discontent.

Please stop talking over your guests
What’s the point of having guests if you’re going to tell them what they’re supposed to be saying? The content and subjects are great, but the talking over people while they’re in the middle of a sentence makes it very difficult to listen. Just review your latest episode with Kara Swisher. The evidence is right there from the very beginning.

    Fantastic Podcast
I just found this program, listened to three episodes, did not agree with everything and loved the intelligent and respectful discourse. Audie is so refreshing and smart and asks brilliant questions without steering the guest toward the answer she wants to hear or that supports a predetermined point of view. And her topics were so different yet totally relayed by our shared humanity and how do we collectivity do better. Very inspirational. Thank you!!

    Fantastic episode
I have never left a review for a podcast before, but I felt compelled to say that the episode featuring Deja Fox was fabulous! I have listened to Audi on NPR for years was brokenhearted to hear she had left. So glad I found her here and now listen to every episode. Great job! And just a fantastic guest, so smart, so talented. she should be working for the current Harris campaign..

    Always timely
Love Audie, she covers the topics everyone is talking about from a fresh perspective. Totally enjoying the addition of John to the mix. We all need this balanced perspective on this very important upcoming election from the viewpoint of real people. Is it greedy to want two days of Audie AND two days of John… pretty please? #Yardie

After the debate, must boycott CNN
I love Audie Cornish but I am quitting this podcast because she works for an organization that enables Donald Trump. Zero fact-checking on frequent lies during the debate, not to mention the debacle of the CNN/Trump televised town hall.
  • KatZBrown
    Just smart
Have followed from the start and really love how this pod has grown. Love Audie and her approach! The topics are a great mix.

    Gratitude
I am immensely grateful to have Audie’s voice once again leading the way. Her nuanced and thoughtful approach to stories sets her apart from others is the most meaningful of ways. Thanks for the great stories, great guests, and great podcast.

Love but needs a new audio editor!
I’m an audio editor and the interviews are clearly not aligned properly in many episodes. It leads to it sounding like people talking over each other, awkward pauses and interrupting and there is echo from I’m assuming ambient audio from the online recording. Come on whoever you are! You can do this! I want to listen to these excellent interviews but it’s so hard to listen to when it’s not quite right.

    Counting the Votes…
On your recent episode, listening to Al and Tonya share their stories of threats and intimidation from right wing nuts believing the 2020 election was stolen/rigged (and apparently all voting, unless their candidate wins, of course) it was shocking to me that they belong to the party who are responsible for these lies is incredible, and not in a good way.

    Kara Swisher
Normally when I hear the topic of a podcast is tech and AI my eyes glaze over. WOW. I feel like I have a lot to learn from the likes of Kara Swisher. Audie led a great interview and it’s been the best 30 minutes I’ve spent recently.

    What a Great Show!
Like a brilliant conversation between friends. Goes deep!

    Disappointing journalism
Listening to Ms Cornish’s coverage of the Fani Willis hearing was truly appalling. Calling the testimony a performance (so she couldn’t be advocating for herself/reputation?) and describing her as giving “hip hop” like descriptions and a “ real housewives” act. Very racially coded (not even coded at this point). But why? And would she have described a DA like this who is wasn’t African American… very disappointing to see the lack of objectivity and even the lack of willingness to color DA Willis with any kind of humanity.

Audie’s voice coats my nerves with happiness
There’s something subtle and calming about this host’s delivery. Whether she’s interviewing an expert or digging for facts, she speaks with authority, wisdom, and respect. I’m a regular!
  • dtennessee
    Right!
For the love of god, how many times can a person say “right” during a podcast? Right? Does Audie ever review her interviews and hear herself? Right? Beyond annoying and amateurish. Right!
  • SickMarky
    Yeah no!!
If you have a mental problem, then use your pto and take a day off.. Work from home if possible should be mentioned at hire and state the days you are working from, but shouldn’t be a requirement. As a manager, I state which days are available to work from home are possible, but also emphasize that it may change. I do agree with the 9 - 5 work day, once you clock out anytime after that should be considered OT. Even answering an email should be considered 1 hour OT that I do agree on. I believe in work, and personal life balance and that should not be interrupted. But everything else is entitlement and as an X’er, I do expect the same work as contracted, so don’t be surprised if your raise is also valued at contracted.

    LOVE
I love all of the episodes and the specific style of journalism Audie has, that challenges the polarised, all of nothing thinking today. She always digs deep and makes you think through out each interview. LOVED the Ken Burns interview. Just, wow.

Great guests, but the host is super annoying! Constantly interrupts her guests. Extremely rude. Do better!

    Love the longer format
I’ve been a fan of Audie Cornish for years, listening on NPR. She’s an excellent and tenacious interviewer, and the longer format suits her perfectly. I much prefer the deeper dive into various topics.

    Newish Listener but very impressed!!
I just listened to the Patriotic episode. I thought it was incredibly timely with so MANY bits of wisdom and putting things in perspective in a thoughtful, reflective, and real way. Will be sharing this podcast with my community. Thank you!

    Listen to This!
Audie and Baratunde and The Assignment team, thank you for this episode, regarding “patriotism” on this very fraught “holiday” which for our tribal siblings is a day of mourning. I still don’t think I can use the word patriotic to describe my relationship to the country, but the truth being told in this episode makes this one of those ones I want everybody to hear so we can have a common language to have a good faith discussion about what we’re going to do with this mess of a country together. I believe in community and I believe we can and must tell a different story about who and what we are as a collective. I appreciate what you brought us.

    Gives Me Hope
These kids give me hope that our younger generation coming up are paying attention. I think it would be interesting to check it with them once in awhile.

    Let them talk!
Great topics but I can no longer take it!!! Audie never lets her guests complete a thought without interruption! She had a good run in my podcast family but I’ve had to cut her loose. Good luck!

    A New Favorite
As an NPR junkie I’ve been an Audie fan for a long time. I was thrilled when she came to CNN and now she is using all the skills she honed at Public Radio on this podcast. Always interesting, fast moving and informative. I’ve never found a boring episode yet. Even the ones I thought wouldn’t interest me like the one about Romance bookstores. It opened a new window for me.

Love Audie, just wish she’d stop interrupting her guests
I’ve always loved hearing Audie Cornish’s reporting and was excited to follow this podcast. The conversations are definitely interesting and her guests are valid but she interrupts them way too often. Let them finish their sentences, please. No need to add side remarks to be part of the discussion.

    The Assignment with Audie Cornish
This podcast is different from others because Ms Cornish gets people involved in the topic to discuss and answer questions about it. Audie asks in-depth questions and draws out the views of the participants without dominating the conversation herself. I come away with an informed, often different perspective. Highly recommend!

    Great to follow Audie’s work
