Deep Dives and Deep Cuts: the History of Punk, Post-punk and New Wave (1976-1986)

23

Join Rob and Joseph as they chronologically discuss all the notable albums of the punk/new wave movement. From the messy, anarchic noise of the early 70’s proto-punk rockers to the tired, polished death-rattles of the mid-80’s corporate synth-poppers, no stone goes unturned in their quest to fully examine the birth, life and death of “the wave” that produced some of the most beloved songs in modern popular music.

A Must follow for Gen X music fans
DDDC has taken on the daunting task of reviewing all known punk releases during the onset of the genre through when they had the most influence. An awesome education in punk and affiliated sub genres. Joseph and Rob are great hosts. This is the one podcast I can’t wait to listen to each month. And it’s approved by all the Jeffs!

    New Wave/Post Punk Paradise
Fantastic podcast. Knowledgeable and passionate hosts and great guests. It sure helps that Post-Punk, New Wave and the myriad offshoots and side roads have been my musical diet for over 40 years. Despite being quite a nerd on this subject, I find myself learning new things. Very highly recommended!!

    Gen X New Waver
This Podcast is Fantastic!! I was a pre-teen, teen in the 1980s and this genre spoke to me from the get go. It is nice to have this history revisited. It brought back memories of heading to Tower Records on Sunset and briefly meeting these artists as they signed our CDs, Records. Well done to the hosts. I rate this top stars. For the new generations of listeners: Gen Z, Gen Alpha, this is your music school right here for a great time in one of the most dynamic times that New Wave usher in. It defined not just the music, but how we looked in fashion, graphic arts, soundtracks to movies and the origin of visual output on Video One, Friday Night Videos and of course MTV.

    Kid in a Candy-O Store
The format for this podcast covers every notable punk/post-punk/ new wave album released on a month by month basis from 76-86. Even if you disagree with the hosts Joseph and Rob on the virtues of any particular band its ultimately a moot point. I guarantee that anyone who listens with a somewhat open mind will find at least one new favorite band or album almost every few episodes! I worked in record stores and “knew my stuff” about this music I thought but happily will confess my ignorance in hindsight about certain bands early material, bands that fizzled quickly etc etc. Well worth the journey!

    Old Favorites, New discoveries
Rob and Joseph do a great job of sharing and celebrating the musical journey of ‘76-86. As the music of my teens and early 20s I was immediately on board but the pleasant surprise is discovering great bands that I missed the first time around. Great format, great guests, great music! I have just finished 1978 and beginning to dive into ‘79, keep it coming!

    Reliving a soundtrack
Rob and Joseph have let me relive the soundtrack for my high school and college years, and discover new artists and albums along the way I didn’t hear back then. Looking forward to what’s to come in 1980!

    Delightful!
Two buddies talking about music - one of my favorite pastimes, especially when it's about music I really dig. That they encourage audience engagement/involvement makes it all the more fun. Never content to just get through it by name-dropping, they regularly tweak their format with special guests and with the consideration of listener feedback, keeping it fresh and engaging, like a living, breathing, live conversation - one I find myself chiming in to regularly (despite knowing they can't actually hear me). Keep up the good work, gentlemen.

    Fun and informative!!
As a 55-year old listener and reasonably knowledgeable fan of post punk and new wave, I’ve really been enjoying diving deep into artists I already knew of AND learning about a bunch of new ones I missed the first time around. I love the format and the interplay between the two hosts Joseph and Rob. I also love the deep dives (it gave me a new appreciation of The B-52s). Keep up the great work, Rob and Joseph!!!

    A Fun Listen
I quite enjoy this podcast: wonderful concept and passionate hosts who may introduce you to something you haven’t heard before. If you like, love or are curious about New Wave/Punk music this is a fun listen with one important fact to note. Punk is covered quite extensively, but in order to manage your expectations you need to understand that this podcast does not cover the entirety of what is commonly considered new wave (power pop, ska, rockabilly, neo-psychedelia, synth-pop, etc.). It covers what the hosts consider to be new wave – some artists that have 50s or 60s rock-style leanings are shunned (Dave Edmunds, Wreckless Eric, Robert Gordon) while others (Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, The Cars) are included– this works out alright in the early years as there is a boatload of great music but as we get into the 80s we will be suffering through Kajagoogoo, Taco and Toto Coelo instead of enjoying the Stray Cats, Marshall Crenshaw and Lou Reed.

Great, in depth and fun podcast.
I just finished season one and I’m thoroughly enjoying this journey. I’m learning about some bands I either didn’t know about or thought I wouldn’t like and it is helping me form new opinions. While I was never a fan of new wave, it will be interesting to see if I change my mind. I also like that there is limited explicit language and only put in where needed making it more family friendly.

Two know nothings with no research
These two idiots profess to provide a history of punk and new wave. They do zero research. They have no first hand knowledge of the period they are speaking of. The audio quality of the podcast is atrocious. This is an absolute pass.

    Meh
I tried to enjoy it, but I am interested in hearing about the History aspect of the music and not opinions about it. They both feel like they’re the “well actually” person at the bar, and most of the time that person is wrong anyhow.

    Pretentious
Quite possibly the most pretentious and facile opinions on the history of punk. These 2 podcasters are the Wikipedia of new wave/punk history. Forget the mislabeled songs/categories, forget the obvious obscure-to-be-deep choices of “I love this song-isims” the lack of understanding of the roots of the bands they talk about coupled w the fact that they get their info from 1 movie and whichever Wikipedia page pops up show them to be the shallow pseudo expert they pretend to be. Shameful

    Essential Listening
Rob and Joseph are doing a comprehensive retrospective of punk, post-punk, and new wave from 1976 thru 1986. It is very entertaining to be a fly on the wall as they discuss every release during this formative decade. Although their tastes do overlap they do have differences as well. This show is most interesting when their tastes diverge from my own. Definitely worth checking out!

    Great history of Punk/New Wave
Joseph and Rob are a wealth of knowledge aroudn Punk and New Wave. Super impressed with the detail they provide. I grew up with Rob so I always knew he was a wealth of knowledge, but listening to him on this podcast just blows me away. Great job guys!

    Highly entertaining and educational
This is a great podcast for a music fan of any genre really. Rob and Joseph obviously put in a lot of time preparing for each podcast with fun facts, curated playlists and great personal stories. Music fans will enjoy discovering “new” bands that they may not have known about before or lesser-known songs from their favorite artists.

I didn’t know what New Wave was.
I honestly didn’t know what New Wave music was. I just thought it was weird 80’s music that I loved. I’ve always loved punk, and it’s great to get some history and listen to these guys gush over it.

Even if this style of music is not your thing it still worth listening to
Like the subject line this is what I totally felt. I stumbled upon this podcast through a friend of mine and I am glad that I did. I’m not a big punk fan but they also cover new wave style of music that I am more familiar with. Here’s the thing though, you don’t really need to be into this music to be into this podcast. Both of the hosts know what they are talking about and keep you entirely enthralled. It has helped me discover some music that I didn’t even know existed. Some of which are now added to my playlists. You would be doing yourselves a disservice in not listening to this podcast.

If you love this music from 1976-1986, you’ll enjoy this podcast
If I’m a fan of punk and new wave music from 1976-1986, this would be my jam. It’s two guys that love their music, talking about the bands and backstory, and listening to tidbits of a section of music that is really it’s own culture. I appreciate the listing of songs in the show notes, it goes to show the detail that went into creating the podcast.
