This is a really fun, really interesting podcast. I love movies so much I can’t stand it. There are no other podcasts out there that treat films, filmmakers, and filmmaking with the care and attention they deserve. This podcast is fantastic, and I want it back!!! Please?

I miss Alex and Katie

I’m so lucky to have stumbled across this duo’s review podcast. It’s like being in a coffee shop with friends, discussing what u saw last night at the movies. Covid has taken a lot away but this is the podcast where u can listen to sharp, funny & honest reviews, together.

Whatever is happening at av club please don’t cancel this podcast. I look forward to listening to the two of you discussing movies every Friday so much. This has become my favorite podcast. It’s a treat to listen to experts in this field talk about my favorite subject; I especially like when Katie talks about horror movies or when Dowd talks about trends in the industry. So many podcasts now are just big egos or “comedians” filling time with sound for the sake of making more content. I fell in love with this podcast with the “elevated horror” episode from last year and have since listened to them all. For what it’s worth I would be very sad if this show was ending. If it does, please find a way to make a podcast together in the future! Writing movie reviews on letterboxd for myself has become one of my favorite hobbies. I know film criticism is a dying art and maybe letterboxd and the internet are a big reason why, but know that there are still people like me who appreciate what you do. If it is over, thank you for sharing with us.

It’s been surprisingly difficult to find a podcast that does great general overview discussions on film and this one is pretty close to perfect. It’s the right mix of analytical and irreverent fun. Katie and Dowd have great chemistry. I’ll listen to them talk about any movie.

I’ve been listening to this podcast for about six months now—I always find it no-holds-barred and insightful. Also love that the episodes are a little on the longer side—they offer in-depth analyses instead of sound bites. Much appreciated.

Woke nonsense I couldn’t finish a episode. Hearing them complaining about Myers killing people shows they know nothing about horror. Stick to indy films that align with your nose in the air values.

I had heard good things about the AV club so I gave this podcast a two episode test. And it was tough to make it through the second one. Typical movie snobs that don’t understand popular films. Not for me. But if you are a film fan who likes to turn your nose up at all pop culture films then this is for you.

I listen to a lot of film podcasts and this one has slowly snuck up on me and become one of my favorites. Given the AV Club's reputation, you might expect Dowd and Rife to be noxiously pretentious, but they're quite the opposite. While their taste isn't exactly friendly to mainstream fluff, they're always clear about what they like and modest in expressing their views, always trying to give a film and the audience leeway to come to their own conclusions. There are obviously exceptions to that and I'm probably biased in sharing Rife and Dowd's taste and opinions a lot of the time, but their vibe is just so much friendlier than a lot of other film podcasts. It's rare to feel like I'm listening to people who are both deeply knowledgeable/journalistic and actually fun to listen to.

Listening to their Pixar episode made me cringe… two snobs who don’t know what they are talking about

I’ve been a fan of the AV Club’s movie reviews for nearly a decade, and its great to hear Katie and Alex talk about movies each week. I think they’ve done a good job developing as podcasters, which is a skill that is often initially underrated by folks who are just getting started. Keep up the good work team!

Katie Rife has somewhat telling views in her criticisms of jewish filmmaker, S. Craig Zahler. Maybe it’s due to a lack of research, but he has repeatedly said that his films are apolitical. It’s the viewers biases and blind spots if they can’t enjoy his films due to their unconscious projections. I’m of course being hyperbolic (and still more charitable than Katie). I don’t think Kate Rife is a bad person but she should refrain from drawing her imaginary political lines onto everything. Show more responsibility with your platform. Note: I haven’t seen the puppet master movie but Zahler only wrote the script and is pretty open in his disappointment in it. While it might not be a great movie to the general audience, fans of the puppet master franchise rate it as the second best entry. I appreciated they were able to discuss their differences though but would’ve liked an interrogation of the opposing view.

The topics for each episode are rich and varied, and almost always lead to an insightful conversation. Both hosts have a deep knowledge of film history and are pretty well-versed in the inside baseball of film production and distribution: but they explain it in a way that’s accessible—I always end an episode thinking in a new way about film. Don’t listen to all this nonsense about the podcast hosts being obsessed with ideological purity. They assess many elements of the films they’re discussing and, yes, that often includes a film’s politics.

Love the AV club, love this podcast.

I love the discussions on this podcast. The hosts are educated on film history and are very fair in their criticisms - you don’t see films being unfairly maligned or fawned over. I also like how they tend to highlight obscure independent films or foreign films. I’ve gotten a lot of great recommendations from this podcast that are outside of the mainstream. Most importantly, the analysis of films here is intelligent and stimulating.

An excellent podcast that harks back to the days of Siskel and Ebert. It complements the thoughtful written reviews on the site and feels like getting to discuss film with a very knowledgeable friend. Hope they keep it going past COVID (may have predated it a bit but I prefer this format to the videos on the site)

This is old school movie criticism at its best, the switch to the long format has been great also. Please delve into more spoiler territory and more in-depth analysis. You guys need to collaborate with others to get the word out there cause this podcast really is a hidden gem.

Love both critics, and never tire of hearing them talk film. The podcast does what great criticism should and makes me defend my opinions.

Simply put: the chemistry between Rife and Dowd is good; they both speak well enough and have not unpleasant voices, and there’s no ads popping up every 5 minutes. In fact, I don’t think there’s any ads that I can recall, but don’t quote me on that.

This podcast used to be enjoyable: thoughtful critics with takes on popular and historic films. Now, though, the first half hour of every episode is about Covid, and the second is a check-in on a movie to make sure it’s ideologically pure.

I grew up on reading the A.V. Club. Nathan Rabin, Scott Tobias, Keith Phipps, Tasha Robinson. Today, it’s not a great website. A lot of advertisements for hiking gear I’ll never need and video games I’ll never play. But there is a small pocket of critics I still appreciate, albeit their blogger-ironic-the-world-is-melting material is grating. With that said, I will listen to every episode of this iteration of the A.V. Club. However, Katie Rife really needs to dial back the laughter. It is a podcast after all. And the laughter is loud and often. This criticism is perhaps unfair of me to say and perhaps there’s nothing Rife can do about it. She’s just being herself and enjoying film talk. But yeah, it’s what stops the podcast version from being great for me as a listener.

These two are some of the best in the industry. I look forward to listening to every podcast you put out! Also, hope to see you out at Music Box every now and again.

Loved the original A.V. Film Club and always hoped it would go the podcast route eventually. AA Dowd is my favorite film critic — even if I don’t always agree with his scores, he writes intelligently and accessibly. Having Ignatiy Vishnevetsky in the original Film Club video episodes was great, but the show does not suffer without him, as his replacement Katie Rife is just as smart and (fun to listen to!). The episodes are indeed short, but that’s preferred! I love that I can listen to this quickly before bed or on the drive to work.
