Ridiculous Rock Record Reviews

66

A podcast in which a group of music fans picks a rock album (anything from soft rock to hard rock to heavy metal) and spends the episode talking about it and reviewing it. Informative, opinionated, and occasionally funny, the show highlights our genuine love (or hate) for the music discussed. Frequently guests ("co-pilots") co-host the show with with our regular rotating panel. Rock on!

Like sitting with buddies taking tunes
I made my way here via Stateofamorica to listen to your Crowes reviews, stayed for the rest of the party. I love the technical insight as well as the nostalgia. Don’t always agree, but always enjoy! Great pod!!

    R4
I love/loved this podcast!! Been listening for a long time. I had to leave a new review because I’m dropping down it to 4 stars. The new host is terrible. If he says “shoe gaze” one more time I’m gonna teach thru the interwebs and flick his ear real hard. Thank god for the regulars or this whole podcast would go in the Aaron’s stinky stinkers pile

    Awesome Every Time
Aaron and Lou (with their wealth of regulars and guests) deliver excellent deep dives into rock’s greatest and most revered albums. I have never heard a bad episode of this show. A must for any fan of rock music.

    Canned reviews
I like these type of shows and when they review a record I love I will listen. But the thing I hate about this show I the way the host and some of the guests read a prewritten scripted review off his screen . They don’t even try to make it sound authentic. I like more spontaneous conversation that’s why I listen to podcasts. It’s almost better to just read the Wikipedia page. Lose the essay!

    Enjoy the format
I learned of R4 a few weeks ago and I’m enjoying the large back catalog. I like that there are both long and short podcasts for my different commutes or household chores. I like how they review an album and have a clip for every song, thus jogging my memory of it. On most other podcasts, they have a clip of only 2-3 songs. I don’t always agree with the rating, but that’s what makes music discussions great. My only really mild complaint is that there are too many unnecessary F words, especially in the solo shows. They seem forced and out of place as opposed to being in conversation. Lastly, has anyone told Aaron he sounds just like Rick Beato, who has some great musical content on YouTube? I thought it was him when I started listening to the podcast. Awesome show! 5 Stars.

    Great Podcast!
Very well done. They review a wide variety of music and have opened my ears to some new old music I never listened to or haven’t listened to in years. Great panel of guests who are very knowledgeable. Keep em coming guys and great job.

    The Doors
Just finished listening to all your Doors reviews (going backwards). Enjoyed and pretty much agree with everything you guys stated but (and I know I’m in the minority here) I will always take Soft Parade over Waiting for the Sun, if only because of the title track. Waiting has always seemed a bit rushed to me due to the fact that they had exhausted all their material from the first 2 albums (of course, that doesn’t stop me from listening to it). I also enjoyed (again, in descending order) the growth of your program. Your dad had great taste!! Thanks.

Phish? Is this real life or just fantasy?
For years I have had a preconceived notion about Phish. I wrote them off as another hippy-dippy Gratefull Dead clone. While that's not TOTALLY untrue, Lou helped me realise that there is some redeeming qualities to the band. I will certainly be checking out some of their music, although I probably won't be going all in like other bands they've reviewed...

I would have a beer with these guys
I stumbled upon this podcast on Spotify and I have really enjoyed every episode I have heard so far. It’s a good mix of humor and insightful commentary and that really makes me come back to this podcast time after time. I highly recommend if you are a fan of classic rock or don’t like Tori Amos.

    Great
Started to listen to this podcast while running. I love the passion and knowledge displayed here. Our musical interests are similar so this is very interesting. It opens my eyes to different views on albums and songs. MAkes me go back and relisten with a different, refreshing perspective. I love when there are multiple guests so I can hear the sometimes differing opinions. Ray's perspective is great due to being a musician. He has insights I would never know or hear, but not too technical. Rock on! Todd

I love listing to the show, and perhaps picking up a few insights into some of my favorite albums and artists. Keep up the good work.

Love it! Howard was great. Just have a bone to pick with Michael Stipe and his pronunciation of the word Cuyohoga. I’m gonna try to do tho phonetically so bare with me. It is a an Iroquois word meaning many turns or crooked path. Which the river that bares the name in Northeaster Ohio surely does as it empties into Lake Eire. Proper pronunciation is “Ki-ah-hog-ah” Not “Koi-oh-oog-ah” or what ever Stipe is saying. He really butchers the word. The closest, but not quite pronunciation can be heard in Randy Newman’s “Burn On” Which incidentally brings me to my next point. The burning river narrative. I’m a historian, so once again bare with me. Industrial cities along what has once known as the Steel Belt and currently the Rust Belt stretching from NYC, to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago all had rivers that frequently caught on fire (pre-EPA) because factories and steel mills among others all emptied their waste directly into the nearby rivers. A river catching on fire between the 1880’s to 1960’s was a fairly common occurrence, especially between 1890 to 1950. All of the above mentioned cities had numerous instances of this. The 1969 Cuyahoga River Fire is highlighted because it was reported in Time Magazine. At the time it was the best selling issue of Time Magazine. The article itself describing the fire is small and rather innocuous. The cover story of the issue was about Ted Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick incident. It was an issue that middle America save and re-read often and the lore of the river fire grew. Incidentally the pictures included in the fire were not of the 1969 fire, but from a much worse blaze years prior. Same river, different fire. The “legend” of the fire spawned Pres Nixon (the most political animal of all time, lol) to create the Environmental Protection Agency and champion the Federal Water Pollution act which later became the Clean Water Act Remember this was all during the era of first Earth Day and growing environmental concerns. All of this is well documented in a PBS documentary that aired in early 2000’s... and features a cameo of my cousin a former director of the EPA. Lol End of the Knowledge drop. Now I guess we all know how to pronounce Cuyahoga Lol

    Awesome track-by-track music podcast!
In early 2019, I discovered this podcast when looking for listening material to make a trip from Atlanta to Orlando go by faster. I was pleased to find episodes dedicated to several albums to which I have listened over the years. As the main host, Aaron really does his homework for every episode; and the co-hosts like his sister Shannon, Ray Zimmer and Mike Cortis always have good chemistry with him and share valuable insight of their own. Aaron even had me on as a guest co-pilot a couple of times, which was a lot of fun. If I had to choose two words to describe this podcast, they would be... Concise and entertaining. Keep rockin' guys!

    Excellent music review podcast!
I listen to a lot of music podcasts but only two consistently and one of them is Ridiculous Rock Record Reviews. Aaron and Ray (and occasionally Shannon) pick great records and give awesome insight into them. It doesn’t hurt that I am in the same age group as they are and it’s like sitting around with friends listing to albums. The KISS Destroyer episode where Aaron describes meeting Gene Simmons and telling him what the music meant to him was amazing, everyone that loves music has had that same experience. Keep up the great work guys.

    Great
Aaron, Ray, Shannon, and co-pilots review their way through a broad swath of rock music history. The personable hosts, informative and humorous conversation, and a good mix of obvious and niche albums make this a great listen.

    I’m Only A Vessel
R4 is legendary among legends. With a broad vocabulary and a quick wit, Aaron leads the listener through albums that move us. It doesn’t matter what kind of music, he and Ray Z deliver a thorough analysis every time. You’re lucky to have stumbled upon this. 🤘🔥❤️

    RnR Reviews Read to you
I WANT to like this podcast because they discuss a lot of bands I dig, but unfortunately the show sounds very stiff and boring. The host writes “flowery” reviews of the songs and reads them to you. He likes to throw in curse words to sound more “rock” but in the end it all just sounds robotic. Dude should just relax, and be a bit more spontaneous.

    SRV
While always a fan of SRVs guitar work. I discovered him through his work David Bowie and was not a huge fan of his albums but did enjoy several songs. I owned this album but honestly didn't listen to the entire album. This show inspired me to download and give it another try. The hosts are intelligent and funny. The guest hosts give the audience a shot at glory. Great format. Stay for the chipmunks. Hey guys. How about some Dream Theater, Ride the Lightning or Whitesnake Slide it in?

A really fun show for album lovers
If you’re the type who loves full albums you’ll dig this show. Aaron and his crew are funny and insightful, and this show will remind you why you fell in love with so many classic records. A+

Killer analysis, very in depth. Got me to give Crimson Glory a second glance, & I'm glad I did. Stay the course & keep up the good work.

    no bull
if you're looking for a host that puts on wild antics, fake radio voice, too cool for the roomattitude, uninspired reviews, do NOT look here. Aaron is the read deal. he just seems to be himself which the bonus for us is a wealth of knowledge and very funny while not really trying to be. this podcast covers many records i could personally care less about but i will always listen to what he (and Ray Zimmer) have to say. they have good chemistry together and they seem like good friends and i have always had at least one hearty laugh 61 straight times so far. Aaron, i look forward to many more episodes way more than 61. sincerely, Rob Bourque at music matters record store.

    Talking Records - Seriously?
Aaron and his copilots (including his sister Shannon) do a wonderful job of talking about individual records. They discuss the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly. Great job team!
