Wonders of the World

268

In this podcast, we'll visit 200 Wonders of the World, from the Pyramids to the Great Barrier Reef, to tell the story of our people, our civilization, and our planet. My name is Caroline Vahrenkamp, and I'm a travel junkie. The world is filled with amazing places that reflect the greatest achievements of human accomplishment. In these uncertain times, understanding our great shared history may help to bridge the divides between us. And if not, it will be a fun ride anyway! We'll discuss the history of each place and the story of the men and women who lived there. We'll cover travel notes, examine what else to see while you're in the area, and dig into the local cuisine. Expect a new episode every two weeks. And thanks for listening!

    Fascinating topics
But I hate having your politics preached to me on a show that could so easily avoid the topic.

A Top Favorite! Can’t wait for each show!
From the very beginning of this immense project, each and every show has been brimming with fascinating descriptions of places I now, more than ever, need to visit. Caroline’s careful research, insightful interviews with people who have visted and often have deep connections to each destination and the time spent exploring the local culinary tractions of every Wonder of the World make this an outstanding podcast that I can’t live without. Thank You Caroline! You and your show are amazing!

    It’s a good podcast
This is my first time writing a review. I enjoy listening to the podcast. It’s positive. I haven’t tried any recipes yet. The personal candor of the host is genuine. The links and references to other podcasts are legit

History + travel + a great sense of humor
Why listen? The podcast premise marries history and present-day travel like no other podcast out there. Each episode is essentially broken into two halves; one half that tells the history of the wonder—a site, monument, or natural area—embedded in a chronological super-narrative spanning human history; the other half discusses modern-day travel in each country, usually by inviting on a guest to talk about the experience. Plus, Caroline is a foodie, so there's a lot of local flavor added—literally! It isn't as tightly written nor as academic as some of the other history podcasts I enjoy, but Caroline's strengths are her irreverent sense of humor and contagious enthusiasm for cross-cultural experiences. This is her journey as much as it is a journey through global cultures, and it's been a joy as a listener to be invited along for the trip.

Everyone should listen to this show!
Caroline makes an enthusiastic tour guide through our world’s most wondrous sights! She explores the human stories from across the globe and works with her fans to tell stories about how to visit the place yourself! I was very fortunate to be invited on the podcast for Episode 071: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres to talk about my trip to Chartres. It’s a gorgeous city to visit and the cathedral was a work of love. A result of community collaboration, just like this phenomenal podcast.

One of my absolute favorite podcasts!
I have always been passionate about accessibility of knowledge. What Caroline does in her podcast creates just that - history that is detailed, yet told simply enough that anyone can listen and learn! With her thorough research combined with amazing story telling, dorky jokes, travel tips, and recipes, this is by far one of the best podcasts I have ever listened to and I have been a fan for several years. Thank you, Caroline, for sharing your knowledge in a way that is fun and fascinating!

Great show, excellent format, adequate research
This show is a lot of fun. Having just binged it, I can say that Caroline and her awkward brother Drew make great hosts and really brought together a very satisfying format. Each episode focuses on a wonder of the world, which is really a framing device for a short discussion of a general period in human history from the perpective of one specific corner of that history, told with the help of a contemporary guest who can give expert discussion on the topic and/or first hand experience of the location. As a cherry on top, Caroline provides a recipe from the local culture. I am eating one now, they are good. This is light content. Don't expect a full accounting of the academic debates on the subjects involved. But not everything has to be. Where this show shines is in the way Caroline uses each wonder as a stepping stone for weaving together a full history of all humanity. Simeltaneously grounded and humane while not losing sight of the bigger picture, the show brings home the wonder of life in a fun accessible format.

I’ve listened to every podcast and love them. I hope Caroline settles in the voice during the body of the podcast instead of how it sounds during the introduction.

Great Fun. Lighthearted mix of travel and history
Drew’s show is a welcome reprieve from the COVID-19 pandemic (writing Dec. 2020) where travel is more or less not an option. His mix of humor and history, combined with travel info and interviews with knowledgeable folks or travelers are wonderful to listen to. And even in the post-pandemic, I anticipate I’ll still be listening - always more to add to the bucket list after all!

A magical glimpse at the world
I’ve been looking for a podcast to help me learn about the world. I didn’t want opinions, anecdotes, or agendas; I just wanted facts and clear audio, which apparently is difficult to find. About to give up on podcasts completely, I happened across “Wonders of the World” and randomly scrolled to the Pompeii episode. I usually only give podcasts 5 minutes before making a decision, but by the time I looked at the clock, I was half way through the episode. It seems I finally found what I was looking for. I’ve only listened to one episode so far, but I’m hoping the rest are just as informative and magical. The speaker is organized, audio is clear, and the topics are interesting. I feel like I not only learned about the site but I experienced the journey. I found myself going to Google, searching everything that was mentioned and scrolling through images as it was being spoken about in the episode... Seriously happy I found you today. I almost forgot there’s a pandemic keeping me from my travels.

    Fascinating
I just discovered this podcast, and I truly enjoy it! I absolutely love traveling and hearing the history of an area. 2020 has obviously kept me from going anywhere so having a chance to listen to and discover places and their history and food has been so wonderful!

    Excellent Show! Very Informative!
Drew has thrown combined wonders, history and food all into one show. It sounds overwhelming, but Drew presents it in a way where it flows seamlessly. Drew discusses his experience of the wonders he covers and if he hasn't been there, he will bring on people who have been. Excllent show and I can't wait for more!
  • Mimi62916

    This is worth your time
This is the first time I have taken the time to review any podcast ever. I’m taking the time to review this one to let you know it’s worth your time. It’s a great mix of history, travelogue, and food podcast. The host is super approachable and funny. Not pretentious at all. His prose is great too.

    Absolutely Fantastic!
This is the perfect podcast for me to listen to at work. It combines history, travel, and food. Each podcast covers a different wonder. Drew gives you the history behind it sometimes including a guest speaker. He then talks about how you would travel to the wonder in the present day, He ends the episode with a local recipe which he also posts on the podcast's website. I love the pace of this podcast and all the recipes. Now I want to travel to all of the places Drew's talked about.

    One of the best
What makes Wonders of the World podcast stand out is the level of research and detail that goes into each episode while still being accessible. Drew makes an effort to work with diverse voices and experts and combines storytelling and research into a podcast like any other. It’s fantastic and I tune into each episode religiously!
