The Arwen, Season 1: Regal

35

In this podiobook: When a comet the size of a small moon threatens the remote world of Regal the Earth Alliance assigns the most decorated ship in the fleet, the Arwen, to destroy it. Its Captain, Marjorie Cook, sees this as an opportunity to redeem herself after a tragic mistake in her past causes the death of over 400 of her crew. It seems like an easy mission but, when the Arwen arrives, it finds things are not what they seem.

    Old fashioned high stakes SciFi
If you’re looking for an old style science fiction story white aggressive sexism, and racism and ableism disguised in descriptions of aliens, plus logical gaps in the science and story structure, this series is for you. It makes me question the whole genre. Crew of space ship encounter a constant supply of very high-stakes situations. There’s a woman captain.

    Hard to listen to
I have no problem with the actual story even though it is nothing ujnique. My problem is with the narrator. His voice is flat and unenthusiastic. It never changes or injects any emotion into the story. I had to concentrate very hard just to get the gist of what was happening. His voice never changes. It is read with a dead tone. No inflection, no mood changes, no emotion and no enthusiasm. It is as if someone made him read a book that he doesn't like. I wanted to like this, but it isn't worth the trouble.

    Definitely worth a listen
This is one of my favorite podiobooks. It has a great storyline, characters that you can invest in and a world that you can really let your imagination go wild in. Highly recommended.

Space Opera that hits the mark
There just isn't much original space opera out in podcast form and THE ARWEN is good stuff. Fans of both StarWars and StarTrek can find likable elements, there's something for everyone in here.

    Very good
I am liking what I'm hearing, can't wait to hear more and more. Oh did I say more? I meant more.

    Great!
At first, all I could think about are the similarities between this book and the "share" series by nathan lowell, and while i liked nathan lowells books, the last 2 were dissapointing. However, this book is really great, even overlooking the copied parts, and if you've never read nathan lowell, you'll love this. It's fast paced and unpredictable. Theres only 2 concerns I have. 1, sometimes the music in the background gets too loud, and 2, the characters are a little thin. Not completely flat, but there really isn't much time to develop them. Hopefully the next seasons will help in this area. Overall, a very good book and the author, while sometimes emotionless when reading, does better than I have heard on others and is easily understandable, even likeable.

    Great potential
Just finished this podcast and I did like the story and characters, it's the author/narrator that ruined it for me. He speaks in this monotone that just drones on and on. It's like the page he was reading from had no commas, exclamation points or periods. As a couple of other reviewers noted there are no breaths between the conversations among the characters and it makes it very difficult to understand what is happening or who is saying what. I had to listen to some chapters a 2nd time to keep up with the story. Now I'm not expecting multiple voices like Scott Sigler or Seth Harwood but take a lesson from Nathan Lowell on how narrate and bring a story to life. I will listen to parts 2 and 3 and hopefully Mr. Callahan has learned from these reviews.

    Can't get past the reader
This has potential to be a good story, and I tried three times to get through it, but the reader just kills it for me.

    Background music too loud!
The background music made this podcast unlistenable. Just too loud over the storyteller.

    Good story
I enjoy the series and am listening to the second series as I'm writing this right now. The story teller is a little flat, and sometimes I have a little trouble keeping track of the conversations, not knowing who is talking and when the next person in the story has started talking. The tone of the reader is a little flat, almost giving me the feeling that it is a bit of a chore.

    Keep them coming!!!
I just finished listening to both season 1 and season 2. They are awesome Even my sister, who does not like science fantasy, enjoyed listening. She is starting season 2. Have you considered writing a 3rd season? Please do and keep us posted!

    Fun Pulp
A light, fast-paced serial with space ships, aliens and a doomsday timer counting down. Not great litterature and not very original, but if you're looking for a fun, pulpy adventure to pass those endless work hours, this will hit the spot.

    Fantastic
This was a great story. I listened straight through in my car during one long drive! I just started season 2 and hope there's more to come!

    Great Story! Needs new reader.
Just finished this podcast, and I did like it. I felt the plot and premise were compelling enough, and I wouldn't mind hearing more. However, I do not feel the author has the acting or reading chops to be podcasting this story by himself. The author does not enunciate very well when speaking, and it definitely sounds like he is reading from a page. A better reader would add greatly to this story.
